Calling on participants to enroll in our current two studies related to Asthma and Weight Loss
The REIMED Reiger Park site is currently enrolling in two studies related to Asthma. Asthma is a very important health issue and causes significant morbidity and mortality.
According to the Global Asthma report of 2018, South Africa has the second highest deaths due to Asthma in the world. The leading factors for the deaths are inadequate treatment of Asthma, over use of beta-antagonist, inadequate follow-up and use of beta-blockers and NSAIDs.
In practice we experience the reluctance of patients to use the inhaled corticosteroid. The patients often say that they do not “feel it working”. Parents often say that they “do not want the person to get use to the inhaler”. Our patient over uses the short acting bronchodilators (SABA) and this increase morbidity and mortality.
The one study requires participants from the ages of 5 to 17 years who uses an inhaled corticosteroid inhaler and a short acting bronchodilator and still have Asthma symptoms on this treatment.
In the second Asthma study, the participants must be between the ages of 4 to 80 years, be on Asthma treatment and had a documented episode of an Asthma exacerbation in the last year.
The site is also enrolling participants in a study looking at a weight loss product. Participants must be older than 18 years and females must be of non-child bearing potential.

Hi doc. What is a beta- agonists and nsaids?
Thank you very much for your question Lerato. A beta-antagonist is the name of a group of medication that relieve tightness of the chest, for example Salbutamol. The abbreviation NSAID stands for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like diclofenac.
